Giant Taro or Alocasia Macrorrhizos is also known as Giant Upright Elephant Ear . A striking beauty with its dramatic, gigantic leaves. Giant Taro is an evergreen perennial which is excellent for bringing a lush look to the gardens. Resembling the ears of an elephant, thick, prominently veined, ruffled, green leaves are borne on rigid stalks which jut vertically from a stout upright trunk. Huge, they can reach 3-6 ft. in length and 2-4 ft. in the width. They are arrow-shaped at their bases and stand upright, pointing skyward, unlike the leaves of Colocasia which droop and point towards the ground. Reminiscent of calla lily flowers, the blossoms consist of a yellowish green spathe and spadix. They are not particularly showy and bloom intermittently throughout the year. Excellent tend perennial as a focal or specimen plant. They grow up to 12-15 ft. high and 6-8 ft. wide.

Giant Taro is a genus of rhizomatous or tuberous, broad-leaved, perennial, flowering plants from the family Araceae. There are about 90 accepted species native to tropical and subtropical Asia and eastern Australia. Around the world, many growers widely cultivate a range of hybrids and cultivars as ornamentals. Alocasias need bright, but indirect light. This is due to the plant’s natural habitat, on the forest floor beneath the tree canopy. Direct sun will cause the leaves to burn, so avoid placing your Alocasia in a spot where it’ll be exposed to direct sun for a prolonged period. Alocasia plants do most of their growing in spring and summer. Alocasia plants that are grown outside can have a growth rate of 3-5 feet per year. What is this? This is not the case for indoor or potted Alocasia plants, which grow at a rate of 1-2 feet per year. Alocasia is an Aroid family genus that contains about 70 species of large-leaved, rhizomatous and tuberous perennials which typically grow 2-6′ tall. Long-stalked, arrowhead-shaped to heart-shaped leaves, often dramatically decorated and colorfully adorned, range in size, depending upon species, from 8” to 36” long. Alocasias have medium water requirements. Even consistent moisture is ideal. Alocasia like to partially dry out between waterings, but they do not like to be soggy. Cut back on watering during the colder months if the plant is not actively growing.Alocasia’s enjoy weekly watering sessions and frequent misting, keeping their soil moist but not wet. In winter, we recommend allowing the top 2′ of soil to dry out between waterings to prevent overwatering and root rot.

Giant Taro performs best in part shade in organically rich, moist to wet soils. Provide a sheltered location to protect the decorative leaves from strong winds. Leaves often scorch when exposed to full sun. The plant requires regular watering and fertilization. Reduce watering in winter. It grows best in higher rainfall areas of the low land tropics.

All parts of a plant contain calcium oxalate crystals, an irritant to the mouth and esophagus. They are toxic to cats and dogs.

General advise about Indoor plants: Indoor plants require a indirect or filtered sun light (NOT the direct sun) . Each indoor plants have a different requirement of sunlight. So please google or read about the plants light requirement. Plants growth and survivability also depends on the climate and seasons. In simple words right amount of sun light, water, manure , pest control . There is no set standard for watering. Each plant has varying requirement of water .Poke your finger/plain small stick into the soil to check the moisture. Check if the plants stores water in their leaves or in rhizomes (bulb like structure in the roots). Check when the soil is dry then put the water. Over watering kills the plant due to root rot. Best suggestion is to shift the plants outside (in shade) once in awhile till they recover. During the main growing season feed the plant with organic fertilizer once a month
