Rojo Congo Philodendron is a large-leafed houseplant that, at first glance, embraces the feel of the jungle. This member of the Philodendron family has smooth-edged, oval-shaped leaves, and it can be found in a wide variety of species such as Rojo (red leaves), Emerald (dark green), Moonlight (washed-out light green), and Green. There are many new hybrids of this species that do not grow into a vine, resulting in one upright plant, as opposed to a plant that grows out horizontally on a vine in search of new places to lay down its roots.
Congoy—everything should be just right.

🔍 Plant Profile
  • Botanical Name: Philodendron ‘Congo’

  • Common Name: Philodendron Congo, Congo Rojo (red variety), Congo Green

  • Family: Araceae

  • Origin: Hybrid, originally from tropical South America

  • Growth Habit: Upright, self-heading (does not vine or trail)

  • Mature Size: 2–3 feet tall and wide indoors

  • Toxicity: Toxic if ingested – keep away from pets and children

🌞 Light Requirements
  • Grows best in bright, indirect sunlight

  • Tolerates medium light, but avoid direct sun which can burn the leaves

  • In low light, growth may slow and leaf size may reduce

💧 Watering Needs
  • Water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry

  • Keep soil evenly moist but not soggy

  • Overwatering may lead to root rot; underwatering can cause leaf droop

🌱 Soil & Potting
  • Requires well-draining, aerated soil

  • Use a mix of peat-based potting soil, perlite, and coco chips or orchid bark

  • Use pots with drainage holes to prevent waterlogging

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity
  • Ideal temperature range: 18°C–30°C (65°F–86°F)

  • Avoid exposure to cold drafts or temperatures below 13°C (55°F)

  • Prefers moderate to high humidity; mist occasionally or use a humidifier

🌿 Fertilization
  • Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer

  • Reduce feeding in fall and winter when growth slows

  • Avoid over-fertilizing, as it may cause salt buildup or leaf burn

✂️ Pruning & Maintenance
  • Low-maintenance plant with minimal pruning needs

  • Remove yellow or damaged leaves at the base to keep the plant tidy

  • Wipe leaves regularly to remove dust and improve photosynthesis

🌼 Propagation
  • Best propagated by division or stem cuttings (though less common than trailing types)

  • Propagation is slow; this hybrid is usually propagated professionally via tissue culture

🐛 Pests & Problems
  • Occasionally affected by mealybugs, scale, or spider mites

  • Treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap if needed

  • Watch for yellowing leaves (may indicate overwatering or poor drainage)

🌟 Why Choose Rojo Congo Philodendron?
  • Tropical Elegance: Broad, glossy leaves add a bold statement to interiors

  • Non-Vining Growth: Great for floor pots and modern upright displays

  • Air Purifying: Helps filter indoor air pollutants

  • Low Care: Thrives with minimal attention and adapts to various indoor settings
